Nestled between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, Georgetown, SC is a hidden gem on the South Carolina coast. This charming port town is the third oldest SC city, following Charleston and Beaufort, and its well-preserved historic district filled with scenic river views and friendly locals make it a great destination for a weekend retreat or easy little day trip.
Why Georgetown, SC is Worth a Visit
I spent a weekend exploring this charming coastal town while staying at 620 Prince and am now convinced that Georgetown is not just worth a visit, it is worth returning to when you want to slow down, relax, and steal a glimpse into Southern history.
For such a small town, the City of Georgetown still maintains over 60 antebellum buildings, which will quickly make you feel like you’ve got back in time as you shop and eat along Front Street. It was founded in 1729 and became a prominent player in the rice and indigo trade due to its proximity to the water. The scenic Harborwalk runs parallel to downtown, but you can also venture out to the nearby Winyah Bay and surrounding rivers if you want to boat, fish, or kayak. Nature lovers come to Georgetown to visit Hobcaw Barony, a 16,000-acre wildlife refuge or go bird watching at the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center.
Sure, you could pack all that into a day trip to the Hammock Coast, but there is enough to see and do in and around Georgetown to merit at least a weekend stay, and I know just the place.
Where to Stay in Georgetown
620 Prince
For accommodations when you plan a weekend in Georgetown, look no further than 620 Prince. This luxury bed and breakfast is owned and run by a local husband and wife duo (both College of Charleston grads), who bought and restored a beautiful historic home that now offers an excellent blend of comfort and character. The restored historic home is within walking distance of everything in downtown Georgetown, making it a convenient and cozy base for your stay.
History of 620 Prince & Recent Updates
Located in the heart of Georgetown’s historic district, the 620 Prince B&B blends in with its surroundings and exudes Southern charm. The house at 620 Prince was constructed in the early 1800s by a prominent Georgetown family and has served various purposes over the years, including a private residence and a boarding house.
In recent years, 620 Prince has undergone extensive renovations to both restore it to its former glory and incorporate modern amenities to enhance guest comfort. The exterior has been repainted in its original color scheme, and the gardens have even been revitalized to reflect traditional Southern landscaping, plus they put in a pool to beat the South Carolina heat!
And let me tell you… both the wide front and back porches will have you fixin’ to rest a spell. Which you can do, with a coffee in hand every morning or cocktail in the afternoon.
What Makes 620 Prince the Perfect Place to Stay in Georgetown
620 Prince hosted me for my Georgetown weekend getaway, and I cannot sing their praises enough. Every morning, you’ll be treated to an amazing breakfast in the galley kitchen, which you can choose to take on the porch, dining room, or in the parlor. The abundance of local pastries and fresh berries will have you ready for a walk around town, or bike ride, which are complimentary to guests.
Each room is thoughtfully and locally decorated, period-appropriate furnishings and artwork – the upstairs library nook overlooking the poor and outside cottages was my personal favorite spot. Unusual behavior for me, but I didn’t end up reading a book – I was too distracted by the Georgetown Monopoly setup, which was such a fun way to get to know the area during my stay.
The 620 Prince staff went out of their way to make me and other guests feel welcome, offering recommendations for local dining and activities upon booking, and then very eager to chat and pour you a drink while on site. This level of personalized service is what I think sets 620 Prince apart from other Georgetown accommodations and will help you feel like a relaxed local.
