I grew up in the south, and let me tell you, there are few foods that scream southern food staple more than a fresh, fluffy biscuit. No, we don’t all exclaim, “Butter my biscuit!” but we sure eat a lot of them. For lots of southern locals, these fluffy, buttery delicacies are more than just food; they represent a way of life and a tradition passed down through generations. The unique geography and climate of the South made it an ideal place for growing soft winter wheat, which is the perfect kind for making biscuits. 

Over time, biscuits became a symbol of Southern hospitality and comfort – two things we do really well in Charleston, South Carolina. These are my go-to local spots to enjoy a fresh biscuit the next time you’re visiting Charleston.

The Top 5 Local Restaurants for Biscuits in Charleston

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit is perhaps the most local and the most famous spot to enjoy biscuits here in Charleston.  This small, charming biscuit boutique is nestled along upper King Street, and known for their small, buttery biscuits that allow you to try out more than one! Callie’s offers a variety of flavors – my favorite are the cinnamon and blackberry and their signature is a country ham biscuit. Go early on the weekend following a sunrise, as there may be a line at this hyper local spot. So local you might run into Callie around town, and you’ll definitely see her biscuits in the local Harris Teeters – the hot little biscuit mix makes for a great souvenir. 

Vicious Biscuit

It’s all in the name, Vicious Biscuit, takes biscuits to the next level and you might need to be feeling vicious to finish your meal here. They are known for their generous biscuit sandwiches filled with everything from fried chicken to gravy to pimento cheese – or all 3 if you think you can handle it! Vicious Biscuit also offers a fixins bar, so you can add jams, butters, and other topping as you please.

The Junction

The Junction, while not exclusively a biscuit place, deserves a mention for its brunch biscuit sandwich. Served with bacon, cheese, and a perfectly fried egg, the biscuit sandwich is a Park Circle neighborhood favorite, and you can sub shiitake bacon if you’re a vegetarian. Their whole breakfast and brunch menu is delicious, so if you can’t decide, you can always just add a light, fluffy biscuit with or without gravy as a side.

Poogan’s Porch

Poogan’s Porch is a renowned establishment in Charleston, located in a historic house along Queen Street, serving up a variety of southern comfort foods, including their famous biscuits. The biscuits here are soft, buttery, and come with a side of honey butter. They are the perfect start to any meal, or you can pop by on a weekday morning for breakfast without reservations.

Biscuit Bros

A more recent addition to the Charleston biscuit scene, Biscuit Bros offers a modern take on the traditional biscuit.
